The History of Thiruvananthapuram

Ananthapuri — The Sacred City

A journey through centuries of spiritual heritage, royal traditions, architectural splendour and civic development.

From an ancient temple settlement to the capital of Kerala, discover the story of a city shaped by heritage and progress.

ANANTHAPURI

A city where heritage meets progress

Thiruvananthapuram, fondly known as Ananthapuri, is a city where history, spirituality, culture and architecture have flourished together for centuries.

The city's identity is closely connected with the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The word "Thiru" conveys sacredness and reverence, while "Anantha" refers to the divine serpent upon whom Lord Padmanabha reclines. The name Thiruvananthapuram is therefore associated with the sacred abode of Anantha.

01 / ANCIENT ORIGINS

A City Rooted in Antiquity

Thiruvananthapuram is regarded as one of India's ancient sacred cities, with a long history of religious, literary and intellectual traditions.

The Syanandura Purana Samuchayam, associated with the traditions of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, is an important work in the city's historical narrative. Sacred water bodies such as Anantha Theertham and Padma Theertham reflect the religious landscape associated with the temple.

Temple Heritage

The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple remains central to the spiritual and cultural identity of Ananthapuri.

Centre of Learning

Kanthalloor Sala is remembered in historical accounts as an important centre of learning in the region.

02 / ROYAL HERITAGE

From Royal Capital to Modern City

Thiruvananthapuram developed into an important royal capital under the rulers of Travancore. Royal patronage helped shape the city's architecture, education, administration and cultural life.

Royal establishments and historic structures—including Chellam Vaka, Uppirikka Malika, Chokkattamandapam, Thevarapuram and Urapura—formed part of the royal landscape.

The city's historic buildings and institutions preserve the legacy of Travancore while continuing to form part of modern Thiruvananthapuram.

Expansion Beyond the Fort

The city's growth beyond the historic fort accelerated during the nineteenth century. New administrative buildings, educational institutions and public facilities helped transform the royal settlement into a more extensive urban centre.

03 / ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY

The Making of an Administrative Centre

During the reign of Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal (1860–1880), Thiruvananthapuram entered a period of significant institutional development.

The Kerala Government Secretariat

The Secretariat building was developed to accommodate the public offices of the former Travancore State. Its foundation stone was laid in 1865, and the building was completed in 1869. W. C. Barton, the Chief Engineer of Travancore, was associated with its design and construction.

Its architectural character combines Roman and Dutch influences, making it one of the city's most recognisable historic landmarks.

University College

The development of educational institutions added another dimension to the city's growth. The historic central building of University College, constructed in the nineteenth century, remains an important part of Thiruvananthapuram's educational heritage.

04 / CIVIC HISTORY

The Birth of Municipal Administration

The growth of the city created a need for organised sanitation, public services and civic administration.

1877

Conservancy Department

During the reign of Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal, the Conservancy Department was established to address sanitation and civic cleanliness.

Five Divisions

Early Town Administration

The town was divided into Kottayakam, Chala, Sreevaraham, Manacaud and Pettah.

An Organised Civic Structure

The Thiruvananthapuram Town Improvement Committee was formed with 19 members. Dewan Peshkar Iraviperoor Pillai served as its first president, according to the Corporation's historical account.

30 October 1940

05 / A CIVIC LANDMARK

The foundation stone for the three-storeyed building was laid by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Pattom A. Thanu Pillai.

1966

Construction Completed

The construction of the new Corporation building was completed.

3 June 1966

The building was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.

06 / STATE CAPITAL

Capital of Kerala

With the formation of the State of Kerala in 1956, Thiruvananthapuram became the capital of the newly formed state.

From a sacred temple settlement and royal capital, the city evolved into a centre of governance, education, culture, science, technology and public administration.

The Return of the Name

The name Thiruvananthapuram was officially restored through a Government Gazette notification in 1990, according to the city's published historical account. The restoration reaffirmed the city's cultural and linguistic identity.

A City of Hills

Thiruvananthapuram is known for its undulating terrain, coastal hills and historic neighbourhoods. The city's landscape brings together temples, palaces, public institutions, residential areas and modern infrastructure.

07 / HERITAGE AND DEVELOPMENT

Preserving the Character of Ananthapuri

Urbanisation, population growth, transport networks and modern construction have transformed Thiruvananthapuram over time. These changes also highlight the importance of preserving its historic character and natural environment.

Heritage Conservation

Protect historic buildings, cultural landmarks and the traditions that define the city's identity.

Sustainable Urban Growth

Support better infrastructure, public facilities and mobility while respecting the city's historic and natural character.

Plans for urban development have included road improvements, bypasses, flyovers and other infrastructure projects. The challenge is to balance the needs of a growing capital with the conservation of its heritage.

08 / MUNICIPAL LEADERSHIP

The Mayors of Thiruvananthapuram

The Municipal Corporation has been guided by successive Mayors who have contributed to civic administration and the city's development.

The Corporation's published Mayors list records C. O. Madhavan as the first Mayor following the formation of the Corporation in 1940. The list documents the succession of municipal leadership across different periods.
